Do you take back the tech? Have you imagined a feminist internet? Has the internet shaped your feminism? Share your stories with us!
What is Take Back the Tech!?
Ten years ago a group of women from different parts of the world came together to start Take Back the Tech!, an international campaign to encourage women and girls to use technology to counter gender-based violence. In that time, feminists in more than 35 countries have taken action by documenting violence, posting love letters to survivors, developing digital stories, tweeting solidarity, creating feminist memes and more.
From November 25 to December 10 each year, local campaigns, activists, writers, artists, techies, educators and allies come together online and off to participate in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence through Take Back the Tech! This year AWID’s Young feminist activism program and Take Back the Tech! are partnering to ask young feminists to write blog posts about their experiences with feminist activism and the internet.
How can you contribute?
As we celebrate ten years of creative resistance through Take Back the Tech!, we are looking back and moving forward. We want to know your story of gender and technology. What role has the internet played in the development of your feminism? How critical are ICTs (internet communication technologies) to your feminist activism? What was the first campaign you joined and how did you feel being a part of it? What groups inspired you to start speaking up online about feminism?
Have you faced online harassment or other gender-based violence, especially as a feminist, online? Did experiences like these motivate you to take action? How have you used technology creatively to challenge gender norms or show solidarity?
Have you been involved in Take Back the Tech!? How did you feel the first time you heard about it? How has campaigning made a difference for you or your community?
